FAQ

Frequently asked questions about WhisperType

What is WhisperType?

WhisperType is a dictation app by NIMASA for macOS 11+. You hold a global shortcut, speak and release. Whisper (whisper.cpp) transcribes locally on the Mac and inserts the text at the cursor of the frontmost app. Audio and transcript stay on the device – no cloud and no account to dictate.

Does my voice go to the cloud with WhisperType?

No. Recording and transcript stay on the device. Whisper runs offline on the Mac. Speech is not sent to NIMASA. You download models locally. No cloud is required to dictate.

Which apps can I dictate into with WhisperType?

Any Mac app with a focused text field – Mail, browser, editor, chat, Terminal. WhisperType inserts via Accessibility and leaves the clipboard untouched. You stay in the app you are writing in.

Why does WhisperType ask for Accessibility?

So text can be written at the cursor of the frontmost app without overwriting the clipboard. The permission is only for inserting. Recording and transcription stay local; nothing is sent to NIMASA.

How do I dictate with the shortcut?

Put the cursor in a text field. Default is hold ⌘⇧Space, speak, release. Exactly two modifiers plus one key. You change the shortcut in Settings under Keyboard shortcut. Open Settings with ⌘⇧Comma.

Which macOS version does WhisperType need?

macOS 11 or newer. Version 1.0.0, bundle ID info.nimasa.whispertype, menu-bar app by NIMASA (Mario Sauter, Munich). Drag the DMG into Applications. On first launch, right-click the app icon, then Open, then allow Accessibility.

Does WhisperType work offline – without internet?

Yes for dictation. Recording, transcription and text stay on your Mac, with no cloud. You only need the internet to download a Whisper model, activate a license or – with a subscription – check the license after the offline period. The Tiny model (75 MB) is preinstalled; after that the Mac is enough.

How does WhisperType differ from macOS dictation?

macOS dictation is built in and may use cloud services depending on settings. WhisperType always transcribes locally with Whisper, uses a global push-to-talk shortcut and a HUD without stealing focus, and lets you pick Tiny to Large v3 on the device.

Is there WhisperType for Windows or Linux?

No. The public version is a macOS dictation app from macOS 11 (Big Sur). Windows and Linux are not part of the product page. Bundle ID: info.nimasa.whispertype.

Which Whisper model should I choose?

For German and other European languages we recommend Small (466 MB). For Japanese and Chinese, Medium or larger. Large v3 (2.9 GB) when accuracy matters more than speed. Tiny (75 MB) is preinstalled and cannot be deleted – good to start, less precise.

Lifetime or subscription – what is the difference?

Lifetime is a one-time purchase and is never locked offline – dictation keeps working without a network. The subscription has a 7-day offline grace, then a validation overlay until the license can be checked again. Transcripts still stay local only. Deactivating frees the device slot. Team licenses on request.

Is NIMASA WhisperType the same app as other products with that name?

No. WhisperType on nimasa.info is the dictation app by NIMASA (Mario Sauter, Munich) with bundle ID info.nimasa.whispertype for macOS 11+. Other apps with a similar name are independent. This page describes only the NIMASA app: local Whisper transcription, no cloud for dictation.
